Projects

We will bring Nabelóse to the United States for their first ever US concert. This duo of Ingrid Schmoliner (prepared piano, voice) and Elena Kakaliagou (french horn, vocals) take the funereal folk music from their native regions of Austria and Greece and imbue it with the depths of contemporary extended techniques. The duo creates dark interpretations of ancient songs and tales from the mountains and the sea. In addition to a concert by the duo, we will also offer a yodeling workshop by Schmoliner in the Angeles Crest moutains, a master class by Kakaliagou, and a collaborative improvisation workshop open to local musicians and an additional concert with this new group.

We will bring the Hungarian violist/composer/improviser Szilárd Mezei and his quintet to the United States for their first ever North American concert, where they will be joined by legendary British viocalist Phil Minton. Mezei resides in the Hungarian-majority Vojvodina region of northern Serbia, and his quintet consists of his long-time Hungarian and Serbian collaborators:

  • Szilárd Mezei – viola, composer

  • Bogdan Ranković – clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax

  • Ivan Burka - vibraphone

  • Ervin Malina – double bass

  • István Csík – drums, percussion

  • Phil Minton - voice

The Szilárd Mezei Quintet was founded in 2017 as an expanded formation of the Szilárd Mezei Trio, which has existed since 2000. The band’s repertoire consists of Szilárd Mezei's arrangements––from completely free improvisation to strictly written compositions––and is based on the roots of Hungarian folk music, contemporary music and modern jazz. Each member of the quintet is present as a soloist, with two strings / strings and two percussion strings, which is decisive in its sound.

We will organize a festival to celebrate the multi-faceted artistic world of Jean-Luc Guionnet, showcasing his musical work with alto saxophone, pipe organs, electronics and field recordings while also highlighting his philosophical, visual and performance-based bodies of work. Long-term collaborations with Seijiro Muriyama, Lotus Eddé Khouri, Eric La Casa, and The Ames Room (w/ Will Guthrie and Clayton Thomas) will be showcased alongside a new collaboration with Patrick Guionnet, his brother, conceived especially for this festival. Patrick is a street clown in France and a duo featuring both Guionnet’s will take place twice - once on the street in Venice, in Patrick’s habitual performance space, and once in a theatre, in Jean-Luc’s. This week-long festival will also include an exhibition and panel discussion featuring his many collaborators.

We are publishing an artist’s book/ monograph on the visual art of Keith Rowe. This staggeringly wide body of work includes graphic design, paintings, scores, prints, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and video. Beginning with posters made in 1958 while at art school in Plymouth, UK to advertise the Mike Westbrook Jazz Band (of which he was a member) to his most recent endeavours seeking to combine Twombly and Constable, the breadth and depth of Rowe’s continued visual practices will be a revelation to fans of his groundbreaking musical work both solo and in AMM.
